A certain type of person is required to be on the school board. They should be committed to public education and wish to increase educational opportunities in their local community. They should be able to devote the time and effort needed to serve as a board member of an elected public board. Finally, they should have a wealth of experience in business and leadership abilities to bring to the board and be able to contribute to the overall strategic planning process.

A board member’s background should include a substantial amount of business experience, including the ability to understand complex financial reporting and accountancy processes as well as multi-tiered supply chains an array of strategic M&A transactions, as well as cybersecurity and risk management. Ideally, a board member should have extensive experience in the fast-moving market for consumer goods or in a related field with a background in technology and innovation. A board member must have a wealth of experience in leadership of enterprises in the form of a CEO or other senior level executive in an enormous publicly traded company or in a similar role within the non-profit sector or government.

The CEO, independent leader of the board and chair of the nom/gov panel should be able to define what they are looking for in potential directors. This is a list of their qualifications as well as their experience, knowledge, and capabilities. This clarity of purpose will ensure that the board understands what “great” means for each position and how these traits will be able to contribute to the board’s governance functions.
